Tunisia’s Fragile Democratic Transition

On July 14, IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa on “Tunisia’s Fragile Democratic Transition.” IFES was invited to discuss Tunisia’s progress towards democracy and provide recommendations on future U.S. support. During the hearing, Sweeney and the other panelists also discussed the efforts of IFES, the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute – which together compose the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening – to advance democracy in Tunisia.

Professor Attahiru Jega: Nigeria’s Champion for Democracy

Nigeria’s former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has been an important force for democracy in Nigeria during his tenure as the country’s top election management official. Recently honored with IFES’ 2015 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award, Professor Jega stepped down from his post on June 30 with a legacy of increased trust in elections and the INEC.
