Celebrating Democracy: IFES’ 2015 Charles T. Manatt Awards Dinner

On September 29, IFES held its sixth annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year’s awardees were former Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Attahiru Jega, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.). The Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards recognize the exceptional work of individuals who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to freedom and democracy.

Nigeria Post-Election Survey

The mood in Nigeria is extremely upbeat following the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections, which led to the first democratic transfer of power in the country’s history. IFES conducted pre- and post-election surveys in Nigeria focusing on perceptions of electoral integrity, opinions of election administration, and satisfaction with democracy. From the December 2014 pre-election survey to the July 2015 post-election survey, satisfaction with democracy more than doubled with a 56 percent majority expressing satisfaction with the way democracy works in Nigeria.

Increasing Women and Girls’ Leadership during Political Transition

On October 1, IFES and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) hosted “Increasing Women and Girls’ Leadership During Political Transition,” a Women, Peace and Security breakfast briefing focusing on challenges to and opportunities for women and girls’ political engagement after conflict. The panelists agreed that women should be part of any post-transition policymaking in order to enshrine women’s political participation in emerging democracies.

Encouraging Stakeholder Consultation in Political Finance Regulation

One of the cornerstones of IFES’ approach to political finance is that consultation with all key stakeholders is essential when determining the most appropriate system for political finance regulation. Constructive dialogue between these groups will help increase the effectiveness of the political finance regulation system, and stakeholder buy-in helps to increase overall compliance. From September 3-5, IFES had the opportunity to share this perspective with academics and practitioners during a global conference on money in politics.
