IFES Announces International Recipient of 2016 Democracy Awards

IFES will honor Nay Lin Soe, a disability rights advocate and founder and CEO of the Myanmar Independent Living Initiative, with its 2016 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. As Myanmar prepared for its historic 2015 elections, Nay Lin Soe’s collaboration with Myanmar’s Union Election Commission, government, civil society and media has been critical to ushering in a new and inclusive era and serves as an exemplary model of how to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in nascent democracies.

Digital Security Affecting Transgender Citizens’ Voting Rights?

In an effort to address growing concerns over digital security, IFES plans to conduct an in-depth analysis of election management body (EMB) digital security practices and develop a diagnostic tool to help EMBs practice better digital security. To underscore its commitment to the inclusion of all people in the electoral process, IFES is interested in understanding the effects of voter registration leaks and data breaches on the LGBTI community and, in particular, on the transgender community, which suffers levels of violence at alarming rates.

The League of Arab States and UNDP Welcome IFES to Regional Conference

IFES Middle East and North Africa Regional Director Zeinab Abdelkarim addressed a regional forum – jointly organized by the League of Arab States and United Nations Development Programme – that brought together representatives from electoral management bodies in the Arab world. In her remarks, Abdelkarim discussed IFES’ extensive experience providing technical assistance throughout the region.

Notes on Democracy

Since 1992, IFES has hosted a flagship event, the U.S. Election Program (USEP), which brings together election officials, parliamentarians and diplomats from around the world to observe and learn about the U.S. electoral system as well as discuss elections and voting from comparative international perspectives. The 2016 USEP will be immediately followed by the Seventh Global Elections Organization Conference. The combined events are scheduled to take place Sunday, November 6, through Thursday, November 10, 2016.

Dr. Andrew Reynolds is a Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. He is the director of the UNC LGBTQ Representation and Rights Research Initiative. In this podcast, Dr. Reynolds discusses a paper he recently co-authored with Logan S. Casey, entitled “Standing Out: Transgender and Gender Variant Candidates and Elected Officials Around the World.”
