Celebrating International Day of Democracy: IFES’ 2016 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards

On September 13, IFES held its seventh annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards ceremony. This year’s awardees included Nay Lin Soe, a disability rights advocate and founder and CEO of the Myanmar Independent Living Initiative, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.). Bay Fang, Radio Free Asia Managing Director, emceed the awards ceremony, which was co-chaired by IFES Board Director and Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Project on Prosperity and Development Dan Runde and former U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick.

Violence Against Women in Elections: An Excerpt from IFES’ Framework

IFES recognizes that violence against women in elections is a threat to the integrity of the electoral process – it can affect women’s participation as voters, candidates, election officials, activists, and political party leaders, and it undermines inclusive democratic processes. In an effort to better understand and address the ways in which electoral violence creates a barrier to women’s participation, IFES has developed the Violence Against Women in Elections Framework to specifically identify and address the unique issues related to gender-based election violence.

IFES Trains Libyan Diplomats on Electoral Processes

From August 24-26, IFES hosted the first-ever governance workshop for members of Libya’s Washington D.C.-based diplomatic corps. The U.S. Agency for International Development-funded training provided the 17 members of the corps with tools and resources to bolster awareness among participants about the standards that are used globally to assess democratic governance and electoral processes.

AGENDA Organizes a Workshop on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Regional Conference

As part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Civil Society Conference/ASEAN People’s Forum in Dili, Timor-Leste, the ASEAN General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA) organized a thematic workshop, entitled “A More Inclusive ASEAN Community: Upholding the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to Participate in Public Life.” The workshop was led by representatives from four Southeast Asian countries highlighting their experiences and best practices of upholding the rights of persons with disabilities to participate as full and equal citizens in their country.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney, Director of the Center for Applied Research and Learning Chad Vickery and Senior Legal Specialist Katie Ellena discuss the vulnerabilities in the U.S. election system and IFES’ work in electoral integrity. They conclude that while the likelihood of a protracted dispute process in the 2016 U.S. presidential election is low, the vulnerability in the U.S. election-dispute resolution system is real.
