Violence Against Women in Elections: A Framework for Assessment, Monitoring, and Response

In an effort to better understand and address the ways in which electoral violence creates a barrier to women’s participation, IFES has developed the Violence Against Women in Elections (VAWIE) Framework to specifically identify and address the unique issues related to gender-based election violence. Through analysis and program implementation focused on increasing women’s participation and leadership in democracy assistance, the VAWIE Framework makes narratives of violence against women in elections in their homes, political arenas and public spaces more visible.

IFES’ Leadership in Electoral Administration Program

Strong electoral leadership is often the determining factor in overcoming some of the greatest threats to credible and inclusive elections. IFES piloted a new module of its “Leadership in Electoral Administration Program" (LEAP) in Colombo for the Election Commission of Sri Lanka as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded “Improved Election Management Program” on January 17 and 18. LEAP is a global IFES program that aims to strengthen leadership skills of election administrators.

IFES Assists Nigeria’s Election Commission to Begin Developing New Strategic Plan

From January 16-18, IFES gathered over 100 representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria for a strategic review of the commission’s progress over the past five years and to look ahead to the next nationwide elections in 2019.

International Language Guidelines on Disability

IFES’ “International Language Guidelines on Disability” includes terminology related to electoral access and inclusion in seven languages (Arabic, Bahasa Indonesian, English, French, Kyrgyz, Russian, and Spanish). IFES compiled standard disability terminology after working with disabled people’s organizations around the world to empower them to participate in inclusive elections. The publication also includes definitions of common election access vocabulary such as accessible formats, reasonable accommodations, and universal design.
