IFES Launches New Training Module on Disability Rights and Elections

IFES has created the first Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) training module on disability rights and elections. The module, which uses BRIDGE’s interactive adult learning methodology, includes lessons on access of persons with disabilities throughout the electoral cycle as voters, candidates, election officials and observers. Activities in the new BRIDGE module highlight disability inclusion as a key component of credible and inclusive elections. Unfair Advantage: The Abuse of State Resources in Elections

The abuse of state resources can be a major corruptive force in the electoral process. In many countries, the abuse of state resources is not sufficiently regulated, or there are disparities between what is written in the law and what happens in practice. These gaps leave the electoral system vulnerable to manipulation by those in positions of power. IFES’ publication “Unfair Advantage: The Abuse of State Resources in Elections” represents the first step in a comprehensive effort to fill that gap.

Uniting for the Electoral Rights of Ukraine’s Internally Displaced Community

On March 24, IFES partnered with the Group of Influence and Civil Network OPORA to hold an international conference titled, “Ensuring Electoral Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ukraine.” The conference was organized in Kyiv, within the framework of the United Kingdom (UK) government-supported “Strengthening Electoral Preparedness and Political Participation in Ukraine” project. It is part of an ongoing, united effort led by IFES to strengthen democratic progress in Ukraine, supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development, Global Affairs Canada, and the UK government.

In this edition of IFES’ Dialogues on Democracy, Editorial and Communications Manager Adam Gallagher interviews IFES Board Director Peter McPherson, the current president of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. He was the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development when IFES received its first grant. They discuss what led to the founding of IFES 30 years ago, the current challenges and opportunities for democracy promotion, and some of IFES’ biggest accomplishments.

Video: Bosnia and Herzegovina Prepares for Critical 2018 Elections

The Consortium for Elections and Political Processes Strengthening (CEPPS) held a panel discussion on the current electoral environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina featuring Irena Hadžiabdić, chairperson of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Central Election Commission and an IFES Board director. The discussion focused on what remains to be done ahead of the elections in October 2018 and how the United States can best assist Bosnia and Herzegovina in advance of these key upcoming elections. The event was moderated by IFES Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia Dr. Beata Martin-Rozumiłowicz.
