MENA Director Testifies on Capitol Hill on “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa” 

On November 7, IFES Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Zeinab Abdelkarim provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa. She was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa,” in particular about impediments to reforms and what Congress and the administration can do to better achieve democracy and governance goals in the region.

Dialogues on Democracy: The Role of Technology in Elections with Peter Erben 

In this edition of IFES’ “Dialogues on Democracy,” Editorial and Communications Manager Adam Gallagher and Senior Global Electoral Adviser and Ukraine Country Director Peter Erben discuss the role of technology in elections. For Erben, traditional thinking and approaches are fundamental to the successful and gradual implementation of election technologies. He also discusses some of the myths and misconceptions about the role of technology in elections and IFES’ approach to introducing new technology.

Photo Gallery: 2017 Kyrgyz Republic Presidential Elections

On October 15, the Kyrgyz Republic held presidential elections. This was a historic vote; the first “regular” transition of power from a sitting president who has completed a constitutionally defined term of office to an elected successor. Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov, who is backed by outgoing President Almazbek Atambayev’s Social Democratic party, won the election with 54.3 percent of the about 1.7 million votes cast.

Training Myanmar DPOs on Disability Rights, Media, and Elections

From October 12-13, IFES held a Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) training on “Disability Rights, Media, and Elections” for 25 people representing five disabled people’s organizations in Yangon, Myanmar including IFES’ local partner the Myanmar Independent Living Initiative. Using BRIDGE’s interactive adult learning methodology, participants discussed how participation of persons with disabilities is portrayed by media, what makes photos inclusive of persons with disabilities, and how to write stories that focus on accessible elections.

Read and share our success stories with Selima Ahmed, a Bangladeshi women’s rights advocate, on her work with IFES’ Women Against Violence in Elections (WAVE) program; on IFES’ support to Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission; and with Dr. Vladimir Paniotto, the general director of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology, an organization IFES used to partner with to conduct its public opinion polling in Ukraine.
