IFES Celebrates its 30th Anniversary Throughout 2017

2017 was a busy and important year for IFES. We celebrated our 30th anniversary as the global leader in democracy promotion with a campaign that featured 30 human interest stories illustrating the positive impact of IFES’ work, and our team in Washington celebrated with a party in 1980s style. IFES also commemorated its three decades of service at its 2017 Charles T. Manatt Democracy and 2017 Joe C. Baxter Awards ceremony, which honored His Excellency Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States, former IFES Board Vice Chair Judy Black (R), Congressman David Price (D-N.C.), and Joe C. Baxter awardee Tamar Zhvania, chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia. As we prepare to promote and protect the right to vote in 2018, we invite you to explore some of our work through the free, downloadable 2018 IFES calendar, featuring photos and stories about IFES’ mission and elections that have taken place around the world. For more on the important elections that will take place next year, please read “Elections to Watch in 2018.”

IFES Launches 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

IFES works to empower female leaders and advocates, and supports government institutions to address the deeply entrenched attitudes and practices that perpetuate inequality and discrimination against women in both public and private life. Our global work aims to create an enabling environment for women to equally access and meaningfully participate in political processes, factoring the unique experiences of those with intersectional identities. Over 16 days in November and December we highlighted the incredible work our partners and teams are doing on the ground to address this issue head on, and we invite you to learn more about and share these initiatives.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held on December 3, commemorates the human rights of persons with disabilities. For 30 years, IFES has worked to support the political rights of women and men with disabilities, recognizing that all people should have an equal opportunity to contribute their voice within the political life of their communities. In 2017, IFES collaborated with disabled people’s organizations to design new tools and approaches to empower people with disabilities to participate in political life.

IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney announced his decision to step down from his current role by December 31, 2018. He has been IFES’ top executive since June 2009 and shepherded a number of significant changes to the organization, making IFES a more competitive and dynamic contributor to the democracy building movement. A bipartisan Board panel, comprised of two Republicans and two Democrats and led by former U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Peter McPherson, will oversee the recruitment process for Sweeney’s successor.
